Jan Jordaan, born 2/11/1949, Springs, South Africa. Schooling in Pretoria, Afrikaanse Hoer Seuns Skool, matriculated 1996, completed his BAFA studies at Pretoria University, 1973, major in Art History, Sculpture and Archeology. Lectured 1974 History of Art at Potchefstroom University and since 1975 Printmaking at the Durban University of Technology. Since 1976 until the early eighties played an active part in assisting with organizational activities in the trade union movement in Durban, notably the Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union of SA. Facilitated the first cross-cultural artists event at the then Natal Society of Arts in Durban, 1976. Through printmaking developed an interest in the potential of the printmaking portfolio in mobilizing artists to address social concerns. Participated, designed and published a number of portfolios, initially as a means to facilitate inter-institutional collaboration as well as promoting historically disadvantaged artists. 1996 Design and publish first with the organization Artists for Human Rights of which I was a co-founding member in 1988, the ‘Images of Human Rights’ print portfolio, 1996; ‘The Universal declaration of Human Rights - International Print Portfolio’, 1999, co-founder of the Artists for Human Rights Trust in 1998. 1988 – 1990 Consultant to the Goree Institute, Goree Island, Senegal, establish the printmaking studios on the island and facilitated the ‘KAWRAL’ print portfolio, collaborating with participating artists, Breyten Breytenbach, Mel Edwards, Souleymane Keita and Jayne Cortez. Have presented a number of workshops and lectures as well as participated attended and presented papers nationally and internationally, including Botswana, Thapong Arts Association, USA, Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, and Spain, Peace Museum, Gernika, Art and Peace conference Co-author of: 2000 - the ‘Break the Silence’ HIV/AIDS portfolio and establish art in South Africa as a public advocacy medium. 2003 - Founded the organization Art for Humanity, with the objective to design and implement print based art portfolios with the objective to employ the arts as a public advocacy medium with a focus on Human Rights issues. 2003 - Co-author, ‘Gernika Statement on Art and Peace’; 1st Art and Peace conference, Gernika, Spain. 2005 - Design and implement the ‘Women for Children’ print portfolio and advocacy campaign. 2006 - Publish with Art for Humanity the ‘Women artists and poets advocate children’s right’ print portfolio and book ‘look at me’. 2007 - design and implement with Art for Humanity ‘Dialogue among Civilisations’ to be published in 2010. Have held various one person exhibitions as well as participated in a number of group exhibitions in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Europe, China, Australia and the USA. Has had work published in a number of national and international publications, including 2000 - United Nations, Geneva –‘History of Humanity. 2003 ‘Art as Advocacy’ – Johns Hopkins University –Baltimore centre for media and Has no particular preference regarding printmaking, painting or sculpture and work in all three mediums. Teaching at Durban University of Technology in printmaking and am director of AFH.
